Beginning Wednesday, the Ives Dairy Road interchange at I-95 is going to get a major makeover.

Most drivers agree that it’s about time.

“It’s the worst,” one driver said Monday night.

A Local 10 camera crew timed the trip from the exit sign on I-95 South to the light at Ives Dairy Road. The approximately quarter-mile distance took 11 minutes Monday evening.

The slow crawl to get to the exit is one reason crews with the Florida Department of Transportation will add lanes and re-time traffic lights.

Weather permitting, work will begin overnight Wednesday. Eventually, crews will add another lane on the exit ramp from I-95 South and North to Ives Dairy Road.

On the southbound side, instead of two lanes turning left toward Aventura, there will be three.

An FDOT spokesperson estimates the work will be completed by Thanksgiving.

Since the project is part of a larger plan to add Express Lanes to I-95 north of the Golden Glades interchange, there will be an extra lane on I-95 that will exit onto Ives Dairy Road. The Express Lanes project is estimated to be complete by 2014.
